Popping 666 Cherries are an esoteric gothic rock band from South West Scotland, formed in 2005 by Gwen Smith and Graeme Young. Drawing from influences such as Type O Negative, 69 Eyes, Marilyn Manson and The Sisters of Mercy; also the stylings of Anne Rice, Edgar Allen Poe, Forever Knight and Aleister Crowley, Gwen, Stephen and Graeme are unashamedly dark.
Lyricist Gwen explores themes of depravity, horror, death, fetishism and mythology. She comes with a parental advisory sticker. Often her inspiration comes from a single phrase, which then rapidly grows non linearly into an apologue. Graeme then retires with the lyrics to his sepulchre full of computer screens, consoles, knobs, dials, a couple of Almighty records and several empty wine bottles. Stephen then ventures into the cave of creation, listens to the aforementioned Almighty records, and then creates bass noodlings to appease the Gwen and please the sound engineer.
Their first project (unpublished), Sin Center of Suburbia, cemented their signature sound. Various singles followed including, Gothic Kisses, Scary Miss Mary, Rasputina and Bulletproof that received international radio coverage. The follow up vampire concept album, Pretty Girls Make Graves, was accompanied by a 30 minute low-budget short film in the style of Hammer Horror and Forever Knight.
Currently, after a decade long hiatus, Popping 666 Cherries are back with the mini-album Heaven and Hell, featuring more depravity, horror, death, fetishism, mythology and possibly other themes...
